Are you following healthy sleeping habits?

Our June survey was completed by 141 respondents, of which 137 were female and three males. The age groups of respondents were split as below:

18 – 25 @ 8%

26 – 35 @ 17%

36 – 45 @ 23%

46 – 55 @ 29%

56 – 65 @ 20%

>66 @ 3%

The majority of respondents (38%) go to sleep between 22:00 – 23:00, followed by 33% that go to bed earlier between 21:00 – 22:00. It is good to note that only 20% of the total group go to bed after 23:00.

When it comes to times respondents get up: 34% get up between 05:00 – 06:00; and 31% between 06:00 – 07:00. Only 8% have the luxury of getting up after 08:00 (enjoy the sleep in!)

Habits of respondents just before going to bed include 38% scrolling through Social Media or website to unwind and relax. 23% watch TV just before going to sleep. Both of these activities are not ideal just before going to sleep as the constant movement, bright lights and information tend to stimulate the brain and not really assist with falling asleep.

43% of respondents have prepared their rooms for a good night’s sleep, by having some of the following tranquil elements in place: dark room, regulated temperature, quite, no screens of bothersome light sources.

43% of respondents don’t snoreJ 11% do, and 38% of respondents indicated they snore at times. (This could be aggravated due to illness, allergies or other external factors).

Unfortunately, 42% of respondents say that they sometimes wake up feeling tired and not well rested, 36% said yes and only 42% of respondents wake up well rested.

Good news: 74% don’t struggle with sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea or UARS (upper airways restrictive syndrome), and 26% don’t know. You can easily find out if you may have these conditions through a Health Renewal, or targeted Sleep Renewal consultation at our various clinics countrywide. Visit www.sleeprenewal.co.za to find out more. Only 5% of respondents have had a sleep study to establish their sleeping behaviour. At Sleep Renewal we offer at home studies (available nationwide), or in-clinic sleep facilities at our Morningside branch.

Only 6% of respondents take supplements to help them sleep at night, and 11% use supportive methods at times to help a good night’s sleep. The majority of respondents don’t need extra help.

From 141 respondents only one individual makes use of a CPAP device, this device offers immense relief and benefits if you suffer from specific sleep disorders and can assist in regulating oxygen levels and helping you sleep better for longer.
