Hair loss, also known as alopecia, refers to a reduction in hair thickness or density on the scalp. It can show up in different ways, including:
In many cases, hair follicles remain alive and capable of producing new hair, especially when treatment begins early.
A single factor rarely causes hair loss. In most people, it develops as a result of several factors working together over time, which is why a personalised approach is so important. Understanding the underlying cause helps guide the most effective treatment and prevents unnecessary frustration.
Genetics play a significant role in the most common form of hair loss, known as pattern hair loss. In these cases, hair follicles are more sensitive to normal hormone levels, particularly androgens. Over time, this sensitivity causes hairs to grow back finer and shorter after each cycle, eventually leading to visible thinning.
This process can affect:
Genetic hair loss is progressive, but early treatment can significantly slow the process and improve density.
Physical and emotional stress can temporarily disrupt the hair growth cycle. Illness, surgery, childbirth, rapid weight loss, significant emotional strain or even intense training can push a larger number of hairs into a resting phase. A few months later, increased shedding becomes noticeable. This type of hair loss is often temporary and improves once the body recovers and stress levels stabilise.
Hormonal fluctuations can significantly impact hair health. When hormones are out of balance, the hair growth cycle may shorten, leading to thinning or excessive shedding. Common triggers include:
Hair is sensitive to nutritional status. Low levels of iron, protein, zinc, vitamin D or specific B vitamins can weaken hair growth and contribute to shedding. Restrictive dieting or poor gut health may also play a role. Supporting hair growth often starts with restoring nutritional balance.
In some cases, the immune system mistakenly targets hair follicles, leading to conditions such as alopecia areata. Inflammatory scalp conditions can also disrupt healthy hair growth if left untreated. Early medical assessment is essential to reduce inflammation and protect follicles.
A healthy scalp creates the best environment for hair growth. Chronic scalp inflammation, excessive oil buildup or harsh hair practices can affect follicle function over time. Tight hairstyles, extensions or repeated tension can also lead to traction-related hair loss.
As we age, hair naturally grows more slowly and may not be as thick as it once was. The growth phase shortens, and the resting phase lengthens, making hair appear finer over time.
Because hair loss has many possible triggers, treating it effectively means understanding the whole picture, not just applying a product and hoping for the best. At Skin Renewal, assessment focuses on:
This allows treatment to be targeted, realistic and sustainable, with the best chance of long-term improvement.
Some types of hair loss are temporary, while others require early medical care to prevent permanent loss.
Certain inflammatory conditions can permanently damage hair follicles. Early diagnosis is essential to protect remaining hair.
There is no single “magic solution” for hair loss. The best results come from combining treatments that support the scalp, stimulate hair follicles and address underlying causes.
Hair health doesn’t start and end at the scalp. We also consider:

I've been going to Skin Renewal in Parkhurst for many years and only have positive feedback. Total professionalism - from the moment you park your vehicle (welcomed by David), through to the ladies in reception (always greeting clients with a smile and warm hello) right through to the therapists. I've been treated by 3 therapists over the years and though they have different styles, each has a special touch to personalize the treatment and any specific requirements I may require. Very thorough ito products and not selling for the sake of selling but rather listen and understand before they recommend. And of course follow ups to check of you are happy with product. This place is a gem purely because of the people that work there.
MoreI started my skin treatment journey in April this year. The Dr was so friendly and explained what was happening to my skin and recommended treatment. 6 months down the line, I am so happy with my skin. Surita is a friendly human being. She has so much patience and makes the experience so pleasant even for the painful treatments!!!
MoreGreat service before and during the PRP hair treatment. The staff are really helpful in accommodating me on the dates and times that would work for me as I come from abroad. Once the staff also gave me an earlier appointment so I could catch my flight back. The doctor and therapists are very friendly and professional. Although the treatment is painful they do their best to minimise it by providing breaks and massaging the numbing solution effectively. Been for the treatment 4 times and have no complaints. Thanks Dr Nadira, Neo, Bianca and the rest of the Skin Renewal Waterfall team, the results just show how great a job you have done.
