Hair Loss

Hair loss is something many people experience at some point in their lives, and it can be deeply personal. Whether it’s gradual thinning, increased shedding or visible patches, hair loss often affects confidence and emotional well-being as much as appearance. At Skin Renewal, we approach hair loss as a manageable condition, not something you simply have to live with. Our doctor-led team focuses on understanding why hair loss is happening and creating personalised treatment plans that support healthy hair regrowth and long-term scalp health.

Why GLP-1 Weight Loss Can Trigger Hair Loss
Hair loss after weight loss is more common than most people realise, particularly among those on GLP-1 medications or following a rapid weight-loss programme. Sudden shedding can be distressing, but it is often linked to telogen effluvium - a temporary, stress-related hair loss triggered by calorie restriction, hormonal shifts, and nutrient depletion. Dr Graham Duncombe from Skin Renewal unpacks why post-weight-loss hair thinning happens, why shedding typically appears months later, and why women tend to notice it more. He also explains why shampoos alone won’t stop hair loss, and highlights medical, regenerative, and scalp-focused treatments that can support hair regrowth, strengthen follicles, and restore hair density when addressed early.

What Is Hair Loss?

Hair loss, also known as alopecia, refers to a reduction in hair thickness or density on the scalp. It can show up in different ways, including:

  • Gradual thinning over time
  • Noticeable shedding
  • Receding hairlines or widening partings
  • Patchy hair loss

In many cases, hair follicles remain alive and capable of producing new hair, especially when treatment begins early.

Why Does Hair Loss Happen?

A single factor rarely causes hair loss. In most people, it develops as a result of several factors working together over time, which is why a personalised approach is so important. Understanding the underlying cause helps guide the most effective treatment and prevents unnecessary frustration.

Genetics and Hormones

Genetics play a significant role in the most common form of hair loss, known as pattern hair loss. In these cases, hair follicles are more sensitive to normal hormone levels, particularly androgens. Over time, this sensitivity causes hairs to grow back finer and shorter after each cycle, eventually leading to visible thinning.

This process can affect:

  • Men, often around the temples and crown.
  • Women usually experience overall thinning through the crown or widening of the parting.

Genetic hair loss is progressive, but early treatment can significantly slow the process and improve density.

Stress and Life Events

Physical and emotional stress can temporarily disrupt the hair growth cycle. Illness, surgery, childbirth, rapid weight loss, significant emotional strain or even intense training can push a larger number of hairs into a resting phase. A few months later, increased shedding becomes noticeable. This type of hair loss is often temporary and improves once the body recovers and stress levels stabilise.

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal fluctuations can significantly impact hair health. When hormones are out of balance, the hair growth cycle may shorten, leading to thinning or excessive shedding. Common triggers include:

Nutritional Deficiencies

Hair is sensitive to nutritional status. Low levels of iron, protein, zinc, vitamin D or specific B vitamins can weaken hair growth and contribute to shedding. Restrictive dieting or poor gut health may also play a role. Supporting hair growth often starts with restoring nutritional balance.

Inflammation and Autoimmune Conditions

In some cases, the immune system mistakenly targets hair follicles, leading to conditions such as alopecia areata. Inflammatory scalp conditions can also disrupt healthy hair growth if left untreated. Early medical assessment is essential to reduce inflammation and protect follicles.

Scalp Health and Hair Care Practices

A healthy scalp creates the best environment for hair growth. Chronic scalp inflammation, excessive oil buildup or harsh hair practices can affect follicle function over time. Tight hairstyles, extensions or repeated tension can also lead to traction-related hair loss.

Ageing and Natural Hair Cycle Changes

As we age, hair naturally grows more slowly and may not be as thick as it once was. The growth phase shortens, and the resting phase lengthens, making hair appear finer over time.

Why Identifying the Cause Matters

Because hair loss has many possible triggers, treating it effectively means understanding the whole picture, not just applying a product and hoping for the best. At Skin Renewal, assessment focuses on:

  • Medical and family history
  • Hormonal and lifestyle factors
  • Scalp health and hair patterns

This allows treatment to be targeted, realistic and sustainable, with the best chance of long-term improvement.

Understanding Different Types of Alopecia

Some types of hair loss are temporary, while others require early medical care to prevent permanent loss.

Reversible Hair Loss

  • Pattern hair loss
  • Stress-related shedding
  • Alopecia areata
  • Early traction hair loss

Scarring Hair Loss

Certain inflammatory conditions can permanently damage hair follicles. Early diagnosis is essential to protect remaining hair.

How Hair Loss Treatments Work at Skin Renewal

There is no single “magic solution” for hair loss. The best results come from combining treatments that support the scalp, stimulate hair follicles and address underlying causes.

  • Topical Hair Growth Treatments: Medical-grade topical treatments help improve blood flow to the scalp and encourage hair to stay in its growth phase for longer, supporting thicker, fuller hair over time.
  • Prescription Support (When Needed): For some patients, doctor-prescribed medication may be recommended to help slow hair thinning or support regrowth. These options are carefully assessed and monitored.
  • In-Clinic Treatments: Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP), Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF), Mesotherapy for hair loss, Skin Needling and Carboxytherapy are evidence-based hair loss treatments that stimulate hair growth, strengthen existing hair and improve overall scalp health.

Supporting Your Results

Hair health doesn’t start and end at the scalp. We also consider:

  • Nutrition and supplementation
  • Hormonal and thyroid balance
  • Stress management and sleep
  • Gentle hair-care habits

frequently asked
questions

Are hair loss treatments available at Skin Renewal clinics?
How do you know which hair loss treatment is right for you?

Hair loss is not one-size-fits-all. The most effective treatment depends on the cause of your hair loss, your medical history and the stage at which it is identified. A consultation allows the practitioner to assess your scalp, discuss contributing factors and recommend a personalised treatment plan rather than a generic solution.

Will you lose more hair before it gets better?

Some patients notice temporary shedding at the start of treatment. This is often a sign that weaker hairs are being shed to make way for healthier regrowth. While this can feel concerning, it is usually short-lived and part of the natural hair renewal process.

Can hair loss treatments be combined?

Yes. In many cases, combining treatments delivers better and more sustainable results. In-clinic procedures are often supported by topical or oral treatments, lifestyle optimisation and home care to address hair loss from multiple angles.

Is hair loss treatment painful or disruptive?

Most in-clinic hair loss treatments are well-tolerated and require little to no downtime. Mild scalp sensitivity, redness or tightness may occur temporarily, but patients can usually return to normal activities shortly afterwards.

When should you seek professional help for hair loss?

If you notice persistent shedding, visible thinning, widening of your parting or patchy hair loss, it’s best to seek assessment sooner rather than later. Early intervention offers the best chance of preserving existing hair and improving long-term outcomes.

I've been going to Skin Renewal in Parkhurst for many years and only have positive feedback. Total professionalism - from the moment you park your vehicle (welcomed by David), through to the ladies in reception (always greeting clients with a smile and warm hello) right through to the therapists. I've been treated by 3 therapists over the years and though they have different styles, each has a special touch to personalize the treatment and any specific requirements I may require. Very thorough ito products and not selling for the sake of selling but rather listen and understand before they recommend. And of course follow ups to check of you are happy with product. This place is a gem purely because of the people that work there.

Great service before and during the PRP hair treatment. The staff are really helpful in accommodating me on the dates and times that would work for me as I come from abroad. Once the staff also gave me an earlier appointment so I could catch my flight back. The doctor and therapists are very friendly and professional. Although the treatment is painful they do their best to minimise it by providing breaks and massaging the numbing solution effectively. Been for the treatment 4 times and have no complaints. Thanks Dr Nadira, Neo, Bianca and the rest of the Skin Renewal Waterfall team, the results just show how great a job you have done.
