What is Fraxel ® DUAL?

The Fraxel® DUAL system combines a 1927nm laser with an upgraded version of the 1550nm laser. The 1550nm laser combined with the 1927nm laser offers both a deep and superficial treatment. Fraxel® laser treatments repair and restore our skin, without surgery and the downtime involved to allow for healing. Over time, our skin becomes damaged by unavoidable exposure to the sun, air pollution, stress, fatigue and smoking, among other life and age-related challenges.

The Fraxel® DUAL laser provides moderate-level treatment for pigmentation, skin tone, lines, acne scarring and poor skin texture. It is more effective and less invasive than older laser types and is FDA approved.

It produces thousands of tiny deep columns or channels to your skin and allows our experienced doctor to treat the areas of concern, one at a time, without damaging surrounding healthy tissue. The Fraxel® DUAL is so advanced that it penetrates deep into the dermis (the very deep layers of skin) without affecting un-targeted surrounding areas.

Who is an ideal candidate for a Fraxel ® treatment?

The Fraxel® DUAL treatment uses patented fractional laser technology to target aging and sun damaged skin.

You do a lot to look and feel great, finding the time to enjoy life to the fullest while still taking care of your body and skin. The effects of sun, pollution, stress and fatigue can add up, keeping your skin from looking flawless.

An ideal candidate has one or more of the below;

  • Wrinkles
  • Irregular texture
  • Age/Sun Spots
  • Acne/ Surgical scars
  • Severe sun damage
  • Pigmented lesions
What is the difference between the latest Fraxel ® DUAL and other older versions of Fraxel®?

The Fraxel ® RE:fine treatment is a more gentle superficial treatment which treats minor skin conditions such as age spots, pigmentation and uneven skin tone. There is minimal downtime with this treatment and most patients are able to return to their routine activity post treatment.

The Fraxel ® RE:store is done in multiple sessions and may assist in improving conditions such as fine lines, brown spots melasma and can improe some acne scarring. There is minimal downtime as this treatment is slightly deeper than the Fraxel® RE:fine, however it cannot reach the depth of the new Fraxel ® DUAL.

The Fraxel ® DUAL, also known as the “Game Changer”, is able to do what both the Re:fine and RE:store can do, but with more added benefits and options. The results are achieved in fewer treatments due to its versatility and is more effective for sun damage, lines and wrinkles, brown spots and excess pigment. The Fraxel ® DUAL has a wavelength that does a “laser peel” to help remove stubborn conditions such as sunspots more effectively than the Fraxel® RE:store. Due to the improvements in the top of the laser, the Fraxel ® DUAL is better to use for treating large areas such as the back, chest, arms and legs. The Fraxel® DUAL is a non-invasive laser skin treatment that can resurface damaged skin and uncover the skin of youth.

What side effects can I expect after a Fraxel ® DUAL treatment and how long will they last?

Fraxel® has minimal side effects and offers speedy healing with virtually no downtime. One may experience some mild swelling and redness on the treated areas which goes away within a day or two. Other temporary side effects may include minor itching, dry skin, peeling or flaking, and a bronzed appearance on the treated skin. There is a limited risk of infection, hyper pigmentation and scarring. At Skin Renewal we ensure that the patient’s skin is appropriately prepared before undergoing any treatments as to limit any possible risks or side effects. We also ensure that each and every patient is appropriately cared for after the treatment so as to enjoy the best possible results and maintenance.

What can one expect after a Fraxel ® DUAL treatment?

During the first 24 hours post treatment, your skin may feel as though it is sunburned, and it will appear pink or red. You can wear post treatment make up (such as Lycogel or Oxygenetics) to reduce the sunburned appearance, and help to heal the skin quicker. Your skin will naturally bronze over the next week or two, and as you continue treatment, the sunburned-to-bronzed appearance will repeat. As with a sunburn, your skin will flake and exfoliate normally. You will be advised to use a moisturizer (with healing benefits appropriate to your particular condition) to reduce the appearance of dry flakes.

Does it hurt?

Most patients describe an increased sensation of heat during the treatment. To minimize discomfort, topical anesthesia is applied before the procedure and cold air is used on the treatment area during the procedure. After the treatment, most patients feel like they have a sunburn, which usually diminishes in 1 to 3 hours.

Can all skin types have the Fraxel ® DUAL treatment?

Yes, the Fraxel ® DUAL can safely be used to treat multiple skin conditions on all skin types. This is what makes the Fraxel® DUAL the most superior Fraxel® machine available.

What areas can be treated on the face and neck?
  • Lips
  • Chin
  • Eye area
  • Cheeks
  • Chest
  • Face
  • Neck
What results can be expected with the Fraxel ® DUAL treatment?

Fraxel® DUAL resurfacing treatments effectively targets both the surface and deeper layers of the skin for a smoother, fresher, younger looking appearance.

  • Improved skin tone and texture and other more superficial signs of ageing
  • Reduced fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes
  • Reduce appearance of unwanted brown spots
  • Improved appearance of acne scars and surgical scars
  • Improved appearance of stretch marks
  • Effective treatment of pre-cancerous lesions (actinic keratosis)
  • Excellent treatment for face, neck, chest, arms, legs and back.

Results are immediate and progressive and improve over the course of treatment.

How does it work?

Fraxel ® DUAL uses patented fractional technology to target damaged skin with microscopic laser columns that penetrate deep into the skin. The laser treats only a fraction of tissue at a time, leaving the surrounding tissue untouched, which promotes rapid healing. This stimulates your body’s own natural healing process, replacing the old and damaged cells with fresh, glowing, healthy skin.

When will I start seeing results and how long do they last?

The results are both immediate and progressive. Soon after the treatment, the surface of your skin will feel softer and smoother, look brighter and show a more even tone. The next 3 to 6 months will bring more improvement as the deeper layers of the skin continue to create new collagen and elastin.

Results are long lasting depending on your lifestyle, age, skin condition and skin care regimen. Maintenance of your treatment results is very important, and avoiding the triggers that caused the initial damage as far as possible is also very important so as to avoid the damage from reoccurring on the skin. Maintenance treatments with the Fraxel® DUAL can be repeated once or twice a year if necessary.

How many treatments are recommended?

Desired outcomes are typically reached in multiple treatments. Studies show that on average, an effective treatment is 3 to 5 sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. Depending on your condition and schedule, the doctor performing the treatment may choose to space treatment sessions further apart.

What should I expect after the treatment?

Depending on the level of the treatment, you may experience redness or swelling after the procedure which diminishes as quickly as the next day or over the next several days. Your skin will naturally bronze over the next week or two. As you continue with the treatment sessions, the sunburned-to-bronzed appearance will repeat after each treatment. As with sunburn, your skin will flake and exfoliate normally, revealing fresher, glowing and smoother looking and feeling skin.

Is it safe?

Fraxel ® DUAL is a safe option backed by extensive research. As with any laser procedure, there’s always some risk and downtime involved however under the guidance of a qualified and experienced doctor, the procedure should run smoothly.
