The masseter muscle, one of the chewing muscles, is sometimes enlarged causing a squaring of the facial shape. It occurs most often in those of asian heritage and can be helped by injectable treatments.

Some personal habits can be directly attributed to an enlarged jaw muscles (the masseter). Excessive gum chewing, chewing hard items like ice or tougher meats or biltong can all can lead to an enlarged masseter muscle. There is no pain with eating. We recommend the restriction of gum chewing, chewing candies, tougher meat products, biltong meat products.

Skin Renewal doctors recommend that patients are treated with a second treatment 2-4 months after the initial treatment. Most patients do not need a third treatment, however, for patients seeking further correction this can be done to achieve the desired effect.

After patients are injected with 2 treatments, most patients do not need additional treatments. Those that seek in further contouring typically come for repeat injections every 6 months.

Yes, since the muscle will not atrophy on its own. The injection will change the physical mass of the muscle and make it less prominent.

Any patient who has a neuromuscular disorder such as Myasthensia Gravis or Lambert Eaton Syndrome should not receive Injections. In addition, patients who are pregnant or breast feeding should avoid injections. Patients with active dental and skin infections should avoid injections in the masseter area as well.

Injectable treatments to the masseter are customized for every patient. There are a couple reasons as the why the injections might not have created an improvement:

• Poor technique- It is crucial that a skilled physician inject properly and into the correct location.
• Too few units were used - each patient has a unique dosage, and treatments should be customized for his or her anatomy.
• Follow-up treatments- Masseter reduction treatments require a series of injections, so that each treatment can build of the last and have the most impact.
• Poor Habits- Those who do not discontinue chewing gum, consuming chewy foods and so on will have less dramatic results.

In a case like this, it is going to require a combination approach. Firstly, we need to look at treatments to stimulate collagen and elastin production in the skin, to get the skin's elasticity as restored as possible and to start the action of tightening up the loose skin. treatments such as ND:Yag Skin tightening, Radiofrequency, carboxytherapy, Needling and Titan are all possible treatment options. The second thing that will need to be addressed is the issue of volume loss. Often when someone loses a lot of weight, they also lose facial volume, causing the skin to sag and look aged, so replacing some of the lost facial volume with dermal fillers can be extremely helpful. Lastly, a good homecare regime needs to be planned for you, in order to hydrate, restore and protect your skin. Good medical topicals go a long way to reinforce and maintain your treatment results. 

There is no set number of units or dosage used for treating the masseter hypertrophy. The average necessary for most patients is 25 units per side, with a great variation based on the size of the muscle.
