MD CODES

When the 8-point lift was first introduced by Dr. Mauricio de Maio over 10 years ago, it was the start of using injectable fillers to promote a lifting effect. From that time on, more and more injectors understood the potential of fillers and started injecting in different areas.

What happened next? Loads of unnatural results popped up everywhere, most exploited by the media who published celebrities looking more like caricatures than real people.

The fact was that there was no clear guidance on how injectable fillers could be used beyond the treatment of lines. There was a need for a systematic approach, and after over 20 years of clinical practice, Dr. de Maio introduced the MD Codes™. The MD Codes™provide injectors with specific guidelines on how to achieve natural results with safety.

    What are MD Codes?

The system is based on the strategic placement of Botox® and HA filler treatments to a combination of different injection sites, achieving direct and indirect effects by giving volume and structure to the face.

A thorough assessment of the face is done through a combination of patient interactions. The assessment is based on the skeletal structure, individual facial muscle movement and desired aesthetic outcomes of each patient. Therefore, even though the same principle is applied, it works according to individual features.

How are using the MD Codes different to the way wrinkle injections have always been performed?

The MD Codes™ are designed to raise awareness that each aesthetic facial unit (e.g. cheek, chin, lips etc.) comprises subunits that must be respected during injection. These subunits – the MD Codes™ – are the structural sites that will create or recreate the most desirable natural facial architecture for patients.

By introducing the MD Codes™, better facial aesthetic treatment plans and a more comprehensive understanding of the complexity of the human face, is achieved.

What does that mean to the patient?

In our social and professional relationships, we relate to each other through the messages of our faces. This is how we speak with the world. However, when we turn our eyes onto ourselves we often zoom in on the tiny distractions that we see in the magnifying mirror or in social media photographs.

This leads to a distorted perspective of how we really look.

As injectors, we see this when we consult with our patients. When we ask them what bothers them, or what they want to

improve, they usually point to a distraction (e.g. lines and folds) that they see in frontal view when they look at themselves

in the mirror or in photographs. However, they are often unaware that this will not change the overall message of the face or

how they are perceived by others. Therefore, treatment of this distraction is unlikely to give them the satisfaction with their appearance that they are looking for.

Before and After Chin MD CODES

As MD Codes™ are based on each person’s individual features, the effect of the work is completely natural.

Following the full assessment, the ideal plan is discussed according to the three levels, consisting of (1) foundational changes, followed by (2) contouring and then (3) refinement.

This allows for a proactive approach, starting with the most impactful work first. Depending on budget, patients can work on a manageable, step by step plan.
