Frequently Asked Questions

Pearl Fusion is available in Johannesburg at the Morningside branch.

Pearl Fusion is a combination of the Pearl Resurfacing and Pearl Fractional technologies. Pearl Resurfacing provides full epidermal renewal, improving pigment texture, pore size and fine lines. Pearl Fractional provides fractional ablative treatments for deep wrinkles, acne scars and sun damage – plumping and firming the skin to create a more youthful look. Together, these treatments offer a unique solution for deep and full coverage.

Pearl Fusion is a new combination laser treatment consisting of Pearl Fractional (fractional ablative technology) and Pearl Resurfacing (full-epidermal renewal). No other technology can deliver the same single treatment results and patient experience.

The Pearl Fractional laser uses heat to create tiny holes deep in the skin. The process removes sun damaged tissue and then stimulates growth of healthy, new skin, full of fresh collagen. The skin is plumped up from underneath resulting in a fuller, smoother appearance; at the same time, there is significant improvement in sun damage as well as other skin imperfections such as wrinkles, volume loss and skin laxity. Pearl Resurfacing is then done over the entire face to fully resurface the epidermis, resulting in a overall improvement in the skin. Pearl Resurfacing is then done over the entire face to fully resurface the epidermis, resulting in an overall improvement in the skin.

Most patients benefit from a full-face Pearl Resurfacing treatment for total skin quality and overall appearance of the skin; however, Pearl Fractional targets areas of significant photodamage. Pearl Resurfacing renews the skin’s entire surface and stimulates new collagen. This treatment reduces fine lines, smoothes uneven texture, repairs sun damage, reduces discoloration and gives the skin an overall glow. Pearl Fractional treats deeper into the dermis and is effective on acne scarring, as well as deep wrinkles around difficult-to-treat areas including the lip, eyes and cheeks.

It is essential to prepare for a Pearl Fusion in the following ways:

  1. It is advisable to have at least 2 superficial chemical peels in the month prior to your Pearl Fusion treatment so as to encourage cell turn over. This prepares the skin to heal more rapidly after having the Pearl and also exfoliates the dead, built up skin cells that may “hinder” the laser procedure.
  2. Ten to fourteen days before the treatment it is vital to start diligently applying one’s pigmentation controlling (or pigmentation inhibiting)products as prescribed by the consulting doctor.
  3. As a precautionary measure, you will also be given a course of anti-biotics to rule out the possibility of infection.
  4. One hour before the treatment a local numbing agent is applied to the area making the procedure with the Pearl almost painless. The Pearl Fusion treatment takes approximately 40 minutes to administer thanks to the revolutionary scanning device.

Many patients see improvement after one week. Patients may apply make-up as soon as the peeling after treatment has stopped this could be anything from 5-7 days. Patients continue to notice improvement for three to six months as new collagen continues to grow. Patients will see a fuller, smoother appearance in their skin, a significant improvement in sun damage as well as other skin imperfections such as wrinkles, volume loss and skin laxity.

Pearl Fusion may be used on the entire face and neck.

The Pearl Fusion treatment is often combined with PDT, in a separate session, to increase the healing rate of your skin. Other therapies that complement the results of the Pearl Fusion Treatment, such as Botox and Fillers, can also be done in a separate session.

Typically, only one Pearl Fusion treatment session is required for mild sun damage, followed by approximately five days of social downtime. For severe damage on the skin, more treatments may be required, but rarely more than three. Compared to other treatment options, Pearl Fusion offers the ideal balance of ablation and thermal effect. This leads to collagen stimulation and a more refreshed, younger-looking appearance.

No, darker skin types 5 to 6 cannot be treated with Pearl ™ Fusion. In addition, if there is a history of sun exposure in the previous 3 weeks, the treatment will have to be rescheduled. The ideal Pearl patient is a Fitzpatrick skin type 1, 2 or 3 with a desire for quick results and has photo-damage, fine lines, wrinkles or acne scars.

One can expect three to seven days of down-time depending on the number of passes given during the treatment. Immediately following the procedure you may feel as if you have a bad sunburn (burning sensation). There is little or no post-treatment discomfort. After treatment, the skin may temporarily appear sunburned and slightly swollen. These effects usually disappear within 4 days. It is advised to limit sun exposure and apply ointment to the skin for four to five days after treatment to ensure a rapid recovery.

A natural protective dressing forms on the skin to minimize downtime during the restorative process. During this time you will be asked to apply Vaseline and follow a skin care program to help heal the skin quickly and reduce potential side effects. By the second day, redness will begin to appear more brown. On day 3 or 4, this natural dressing will peel or slough off; leaving new, healthy, vibrant skin underneath and make up can be worn on day 5 (provided all peeling has stopped). In a short time, patients will notice overall skin clarity, smoothness and softness - all from a 40 minute treatment with only 3 - 5 days of "social" downtime Remember to always apply a broad spectrum sunscreen when outdoors to minimize sun damage.
