Photo Dynamic Therapy PDT

PDT therapy (photo-dynamic therapy) uses a combination of specifically selected wavelengths of light, namely blue, red and yellow light to stimulate various processes within the deeper skin tissue. It can be had as a stand-alone treatment or combined with various other treatments for optimal results and healing properties.

PDT Rejuvenation works with the body's own natural processes to counteract the effects of ageing. The different lights target specific cells which are responsible for the synthesis and repair of the skin's supportive structures.

Consequently, substances are then released that induce fibroblast activity and growth factors. A combination of red and yellow light in specified sequences over a period of 5 weeks softens fine lines, improves skin's softness, smoothness, tone and clarity all with no downtime or pain.

All skin types can be treated.

Are Photo Dynamic Light PDT treatments available at all Skin Renewal branches ?
What is Photo Dynamic Therapy PDT?

PDT therapy uses a combination of pure visible Blue, Red and invisible Yellow light to stimulate the deeper skin tissue. Depending on the wavelength, PDT therapy can be used for:

  • PDT Skin rejuvenation with a combination of red and/or yellow light can treat photo aged skin leading to a softening of fine lines and improved skin tone and smoothness.
  • PDT with red and/or yellow lights can also be used for wound healing before and after plastic surgery and ablative laser resurfacing.
  • PDT / ALA Therapy treats precancerous skin lesions such as Actinic Keratosis, Basal Cell Carcinomas (BCC) and severe cystic acne. If you have multiple Actinic Keratosis, this treatment can be covered by your insurance.
  • PDT Acne therapy uses alternating blue and red light (or a combination of blue and red = "Magenta") to clear up a problem skin with no pain or downtime.
  • PDT Red therapy can be used post Botox and Dermal Filler procedure to improve the swelling and bruising that can occur post treatment.
  • PDT Red therapy can be used after various peel treatments to reduce inflammation, and improve Skin Rejuvenation.
  • PDT Red therapy can be used for Perioral Dermatitis and Dermatitis.
  • PDT Red therapy can be used for Rosacea / redness to reduce inflammation. A series of treatments is necessary
  • PDT yellow therapy can be used prior to more aggressive laser treatments such as Pearl and Fractional laser as well as deeper peels, i.e. Yellow Peel, to speed up the recovery process.

For all of the above, a series of treatments (the right light at the right time) is needed for optimum results.

How does PDT for Acne Therapy work?

Recent phototherapy (light therapy) research using visible blue and red light has proven effective in the treatment of mild to moderate acne, pimples and blackheads. Clearance rates have exceeded over 60% in several studies, indicating this treatment's effectiveness.

If the blue light is combined with red light, stubborn and severe cases of acne can be treated with significantly fewer side effects and, most importantly, no downtime or pain. This is a great advantage for acne sufferers. Recent research has shown that blue light therapy works by destroying the bacteria responsible for causing acne. Red light penetrates more deeply into tissue and also has anti-inflammatory properties. Consequently, substances are then released that induce fibroblast activity and growth factors. This is a positive aspect for sufferers to consider if they have a tendency to scar. Combination phototherapy works through the antibacterial and anti-inflammatory nature of blue and red light. However, only by delivering the right wavelengths in the proper sequence can optimum results be seen.

In a recent study of combination blue/red light phototherapy, a marked improvement in lesion counts after the final treatment was seen. There was a noticeable improvement up to 12 weeks after the final treatment session. After a series of eight sessions of alternate blue/red phototherapy (twice weekly treatments) over a four-week period, there was an average reduction of over 80% in acne lesion counts compared to baseline and a marked reduction in sebum production.

After combination therapy, optimal results are reached after the therapy has ceased. An added benefit is that the results of combination therapy are more durable. There are significantly fewer side effects and, importantly, no downtime, which is what most acne sufferers desire. All skin types can be treated.

Delivering the right wavelength at the right time is crucial, and the combination wavelength approach offers an effective and durable treatment that has proven helpful for moderate inflammatory acne. More importantly, blue/red combination therapy offers an option for difficult-to-treat acne cases that have failed through conventional treatments.

Friendly greetings to all. I was currently at the skin renewal Rosebank branch. And firstly I must say the people working there are respectful and kind. My therapist that day was Noxy Mkwanazi. And I must say her work ethic is of high quality including her characteristic of being kind. The moment you enter the branch you feel welcomed by the staff. Which makes one feel comfortable and acceptable and never judged or criticized. To the Rosebank branch– May the Lord be with all of you, I ask in the name of Jesus Christ.

I cannot express how grateful I am for my journey with Skin Renewal, Fourways. At first, I was hesitant to invest in my skin renewal journey, partly due to cost concerns and partly because I felt uncomfortable sharing the state of my skin without makeup. From the moment I walked through their doors for a consultation to now, nearly four months into this transformative journey, I have experienced nothing but outstanding support, care and encouragement. The team at Skin Renewal, Fourways: particularly Nadia and Helen, have played a pivotal role in making this journey comfortable and empowering. Their welcoming and nurturing demeanor has made all the difference. I truly appreciate their dedication and expertise. My experience at Skin Renewal, Fourways has lifted all the barriers I had initially, and I now feel more confident and excited about my ongoing skin renewal process, I still have a way to go. I would highly recommend their products and services to anyone looking to embark on their own journey to better skin health and self-confidence.

Beverley knew exactly what first-time treatment to give my extremely dry, yet acne-prone skin. I also purchased some lovely Neostrata skincare products after Beverly shared her in-depth knowledge with me. I really appreciate the help that was given in choosing an at-home skincare routine. I cannot wait to go back next month.

I really don't know what to say, and how to thank Helen and Dr Maureen for the most unforgettable experience. Coming all the way from Sub-Saharan Africa, (Zimbabwe). This treatment is exactly what the doctor ordered! With all the stress of living in Zimbabwe, this is what I needed. Feel the fear and do it anyway! The Renewal Institute is an absolute must for any girl. Thank you.

I had a procedure done to remove my skin tags/DPN’s on the 10th of November 2018. The therapist was Anouska Busby. I would sincerely, from the bottom of my heart like to extend my gratitude to Skin Renewal Irene. The procedure was painful but Anouska did a great job calming me and talking to me through it. I really appreciate it. I have healed beautifully since then and I’m so happy with the end results. I will definitely recommend this clinic for all your skin/ beauty needs. I can’t thank Anouska enough!
