What Is Hair Loss?

Hair loss, or alopecia, is the gradual or sudden shedding of hair from the scalp or body, resulting in thinning, patchiness, or complete baldness. It occurs when the hair growth cycle is disrupted due to factors such as genetics, hormonal imbalances, autoimmune conditions, stress, nutritional deficiencies, or specific medical treatments. The most common type is androgenetic alopecia (male or female pattern hair loss), which is often hereditary and progressive.

While some hair loss is normal during the hair cycle, excessive or persistent shedding may indicate an underlying issue that can be addressed with targeted treatments, such as PRP therapy, lifestyle changes, and medical guidance.

The Four Cycles of Hair Growth

Hair loss typically progresses through several stages, beginning with gradual thinning at the temples or crown. In early stages, hair follicles shrink, producing finer, shorter strands—a process known as miniaturisation. As the condition progresses, hair becomes noticeably sparse, and the affected areas continue to expand. This may lead to partial or complete baldness in advanced stages without intervention. Recognising and treating hair loss early improves the chances of preserving and stimulating existing follicles, making early-stage intervention crucial for long-term results.

Understanding these stages is essential for treating hair loss effectively, as therapies like PRP aim to extend the anagen phase and stimulate dormant follicles.

This is the active growth phase, during which the hair follicle produces new hair. It can last between 2 and 7 years, and about 85–90% of the hair on your scalp is in this phase at any given time.

A short phase lasts 2–3 weeks, where hair growth slows down and the follicle shrinks. This signals the end of the active growth period.

This phase lasts around 3 months. During this phase, the hair doesn't grow but remains attached while the follicle rests. About 10–15% of hair is in this phase.

A sub-phase of telogen, where old hairs are shed to make way for new anagen hairs. It's normal to lose 50 to 100 hairs daily during this phase.

What Is PRP Therapy for Hair Loss?

PRP therapy uses the body's healing powers to stimulate hair regrowth. A small amount of your blood is drawn, processed to concentrate platelets and growth factors, and then injected into areas of thinning hair on the scalp. These platelets release signals that:

Great service before and during the PRP hair treatment. The staff are really helpful in accommodating me on the dates and times that would work for me as I come from abroad. Once the staff also gave me an earlier appointment so I could catch my flight back. The doctor and therapists are very friendly and professional. Although the treatment is painful they do their best to minimise it by providing breaks and massaging the numbing solution effectively. Been for the treatment 4 times and have no complaints. Thanks Dr Nadira, Neo, Bianca and the rest of the Skin Renewal Waterfall team, the results just show how great a job you have done.
