Spider veins are small unsightly red or purple vessels on the surface of the skin and they can be found anywhere on the face or body. Both men and women are bothered by the appearance of body and facial veins and vascular lsions such as cherry spots, venous lakes, telangiectasias and spider neavi.
These small vessels are often red or blue and are closer to the surface of the skin than varicose veins. They can look like “tiny tree branches” or “spider webs” with their short jagged lines. Spider veins are commonly found on the legs and are very often as a result of professions where one stands for long hours. They can cover either a very small or very large area of skin.
The causes of telangiectasias or these small superficial veins on the face include prolonged exposure to the sun, ageing, trauma, thinning skin, medical conditions, and certain habits such as smoking which is damaging to the skin.
Women tend to be affected by spider veins 2-4 times more commonly than men do, due to the fact that female hormones and pregnancies are so commonly implicated in their cause.
Thankfully, a few excellent treatment options exist to target and treat these vascular lesions:
- Cutera ND:Yag – Long pulsed ND:Yag (1064nm wavelength) is the gold standard for fine vessel removal
- PDL (Pulsed Dye Laser)
- Candela VBeam Long Pulsed ND:Yag
- Cautery with Secret RF
PLEASE NOTE: Varicose veins require an entirely different treatment approach such as sclerotherapy.
