At Skin Renewal, we utilise the latest technological innovations to provide laser hair reduction treatments suitable for any skin type and hair colour except for red, grey or white hair. Our safe, effective, and well-researched treatments include:
Cutera CoolGlide – ND:Yag Laser
Lightsheer - Diode Laser
To achieve the best results from laser hair reduction, it is crucial to avoid suntan (including artificial tan), sun exposure, and any form of inflammation or sensitivity in the treated areas. Sun exposure requires lower laser settings, reducing treatment effectiveness. We manage skin sensitivity or inflammation before proceeding with laser hair reduction.
Cutera ND:Yag: Awarded for its versatility, the Cutera Nd:Yag is an FDA-cleared 1064nm laser suitable for all skin types, including tanned skin. It effectively treats Pseudo-Folliculitis Barbae (ingrown hairs) and can be used year-round.
ProWave™ IPL: This fourth-generation IPL device is ideal for Skin Types I-IV. Its large spot size and fast repetition rate make it perfect for treating large areas quickly. The ProWave™ emits infrared primarily light above 770nm and features an adjustable output spectrum for customised treatments.
Lightsheer Diode Laser: Effective for all skin types and hair colours (excluding grey or white hair), it also offers precision and versatility.
Laser hair reduction uses infrared light to target the germ cells in hair follicles. The hair must be in the follicle for the laser to work, so avoid waxing or plucking before treatment. Shaving or cutting the hair is allowed.
The average treatment course consists of six to eight sessions. Only hairs in the anagen (growing) phase can be effectively targeted, as telogen (resting) hairs do not have mature pigment. Hormonal hair growth or certain conditions may require additional sessions.
Facial hair is often hormone-dependent, making it more challenging to treat. More frequent sessions, spaced one month apart, are typically required. For effective hair reduction, expect to need 10 to 12 treatments.
While laser hair reduction is generally safe, there may be some discomfort, likened to snapping a warm rubber band. At Skin Renewal, we use ice packs to minimise discomfort. Post-treatment redness and mild swelling usually dissipate within hours, and makeup can be applied immediately.
Our lasers are FDA-approved for permanent hair reduction. Data shows that 30-90% of hair does not regrow after completing the treatment cycle, assuming appropriate treatment and individual-specific sessions. Annual maintenance treatments may be necessary, especially for lighter hairs, which are more challenging to remove.
Laser Hair Removal treatments are available in Gauteng at the Morningside, Parkhurst, Rosebank, Bedfordview, Fourways, West Rand, Irene, Waterfall, Irene, Lynnwood and Brooklyn clinics, as well as in the Western Cape at Cape Quarter, Claremont, Constantia, Century City, Stellenbosch, Paarl and Willowbridge clinics, and Kwa-Zulu Natal at the Ballito, Durban and Umhlanga clinics.
If you stop your laser hair removal sessions after the fourth treatment, you may not achieve the desired long-term results. Hair growth cycles vary; typically, multiple sessions are needed to target all hair follicles effectively. Stopping early means some hairs may regrow, although they might be finer and lighter than before.
Laser hair removal is generally well-tolerated, with most patients describing the sensation as similar to a snapping rubber band or mild discomfort. Pain levels vary depending on the treated area and individual pain tolerance. Advanced laser systems often include cooling mechanisms to minimise discomfort.
Hair regrowth can occur after a laser hair removal session because hair follicles are at different growth cycle stages. Laser treatment targets hairs in the active growth phase, so multiple sessions are required to catch all hairs as they cycle through this phase. Hormonal changes can also influence hair regrowth.
Shaving the treatment area 24 hours before your laser hair removal session is recommended. Shaving ensures the laser targets the hair follicle beneath the skin, not the hair above it, improving the effectiveness of the treatment and reducing the risk of surface burns.
The number of laser hair removal sessions needed varies based on hair colour, thickness, and treatment area. Most patients require six to eight sessions to achieve optimal results. Some areas may need additional treatments due to hormonal influences or hair growth patterns.
Laser hair removal offers a more permanent solution than waxing. While waxing removes hair from the root and must be repeated every few weeks, laser treatment targets the hair follicles, providing longer-lasting results and reducing hair growth over time with less discomfort and inconvenience.
