Children of Fire was founded with a powerful mission — to bring healing and hope to young survivors of devastating burn injuries across Africa. Beyond medical care, the charity is committed to uplifting the communities where these children live, focusing strongly on education around fire prevention and burn safety.
Every year, more than 15 000 children in South Africa alone suffer severe burn injuries. The charity’s story began when founder Bronwen Jones took on an extraordinary challenge: to save and rebuild the life of Dorah Mokoena, who, at just seven months old, was severely burned in a shack fire. Dorah lost her eyelids, nose, lips, fingers, and part of her forehead bone due to the intensity of the flames. Against all odds, she survived — believed to be the most severely burned child in the world to do so. With no one else willing to help, Bronwen stepped in, working tirelessly to save Dorah’s eyes and restore her face. Abandoned by her biological mother, Dorah found a new home and family with Bronwen.
Since then, Children of Fire has assisted over 200 children through complex surgeries and holistic care. Yet, the journey remains filled with challenges — from the extent of the injuries to the deep prejudice survivors often face in society.
Since 2008, Skin Renewal has proudly supported Children of Fire by offering non-invasive laser treatments to reduce scarring and resurface damaged skin. These treatments, carried out at the Parkhurst branch, have helped children regain not only healthier skin but also renewed confidence and dignity.
Looking ahead, Children of Fire aims to share its expertise in burn treatment, psychological recovery, and fire prevention more widely across Africa. The charity continues to expand its projects — from shaping legislation to empowering informal settlement communities with tools to create safer living conditions. With its broad, forward-thinking approach, Children of Fire is striving to build a continent where fewer children endure such tragedies and where survivors are supported with compassion and care.
