CO-SANC Cat Shelter & Animal Adoption Centre

CO-SANC: A Compassionate, Pro-Life Animal Sanctuary

CO-SANC is a unique, no-kill and scientifically managed cat shelter and adoption centre. While not a new charity, it represents a pioneering collaboration — a co-operative venture between a veterinary clinic and five pro-life animal charities, all united by their commitment to animal welfare.

Unlike traditional shelters, CO-SANC does not take in animals directly from the public. Instead, all admissions are carefully controlled and managed by the on-site veterinarian through a strict admission and 12-point quarantine process. Every animal is sourced through one of the participating pro-life charities, ensuring responsible intake and care. Cats live permanently on the sanctuary’s serene country property in Nooitgedacht, between the Lion Park and Muldersdrift, while dogs and other animals are brought in on weekends for potential adopters to meet.

Ethical, Science-Based Care

At CO-SANC, the welfare of the animals comes first. Their guiding principles include:

  • Ensuring every cat is sterilised, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, and viral-tested before adoption.
  • Sourcing all animals exclusively from partner pro-life charities.
  • Placing every cat through a comprehensive 12-step quarantine process before making them available.
  • Providing lifelong commitment — any animal adopted with a CO-SANC microchip will always have a safe home to return to.

This model allows the organisation to combine compassion with science, ensuring healthier, safer, and happier adoptions.

Volunteer-Driven, Donation-Focused

With the exception of one caretaker, everyone at CO-SANC — including the veterinary professionals — works on a voluntary basis. This means every donation goes directly to the animals, funding their food, care, and shelter.

Skin Renewal’s Contribution

In December 2009, the Skin Renewal team came together to support CO-SANC in a hands-on way. The team helped build and paint a new puppy run for the young dogs entering the shelter and generously donated large quantities of towels to assist in daily care. This collaboration reflects Skin Renewal’s ongoing commitment to supporting compassionate, community-focused initiatives.
