James & Ethel Gray Park - Spring Clean

Restoring James & Ethel Gray Park: A Community Effort

For some time, litter and illegal dumping have threatened to turn James & Ethel Gray Park in Birdhaven — a much-loved green space in Johannesburg — into a problematic area. Determined to make a lasting difference, the Skin Renewal team, together with their families and valued suppliers, came together on 20 September 2015 for a day dedicated to restoring and reviving this city jewel.

In just one day, volunteers collected over 200 bags of litter and planted 55 new trees throughout the park. These efforts were not only about immediate change, but also about ensuring a healthier, greener environment that will benefit the community for many years to come.

A Day of Collaboration and Gratitude

This initiative was made possible through the generosity, support, and teamwork of many organisations and community members. A heartfelt thank you goes to:

  • Peech Boutique Hotel for hosting us with morning coffee before the day’s activities.
  • Sun Trees for providing high-quality trees, planning their placement, and guiding us in correct planting for long-term survival.
  • Melrose Birdhaven Community Active Protection (MBCAP) for ensuring everyone’s safety throughout the day.
  • Inside Out Security & Living for taking care of our vehicles.
  • Pikitup for supplying refuse bags.
  • Johannesburg City Parks for granting permission to carry out the initiative.
  • Councillor Jack Cooper, Ward 74 Johannesburg, for his valued support and presence.
  • Ihlathi, the Melrose-Birdhaven Conservancy, and its members for publicising the initiative, offering support, and joining us on the day.
  • Corporate Gift Shop for supplying our branded golf shirts.

Sponsors Making a Lasting Difference

We are especially grateful to the following companies, which collectively contributed over R60 000 towards trees, benches, and dustbins for the park:

  • Fagron South Africa
  • Genop Healthcare
  • Mesoestetic South Africa
  • Allergan Pharmaceuticals
  • Leenyx
  • The Brokerage
  • Lycoderm
  • Lamelle
  • Galderma
  • M and F Business Furniture

Looking Ahead

Our next step is to install recycled plastic benches and dustbins throughout the park, making it more inviting for visitors while encouraging long-term cleanliness. We also call on community associations, Johannesburg City Parks, and neighbouring schools to join in making this initiative sustainable. Regular clean-up days, recycling education, and environmental awareness will ensure this park continues to thrive as an oasis in the urban jungle.

We encourage families to visit the park more often, spend quality time outdoors, and enjoy this renewed space. Together, we can create a cleaner, greener Johannesburg.
