The District 6 People’s Market was created with a powerful vision: to establish a dedicated marketplace run entirely by the District 6 community and to shine a spotlight on the wider Trafalgar Renewal Weekend activities.
This vision came to life with 58 vibrant stalls, 56 of which were community-funded, while the school and Streetscapes were given free spaces to showcase their work. The event was officially opened by newly elected Ward Councillor Brandon Golding, who not only welcomed visitors but stayed to engage for the entire day.
The market received front-page coverage in the Cape Argus Weekend Edition and a follow-up feature in the Argus AM, with Voice of the Cape also broadcasting the story. Alongside positive media attention, the market generated a modest profit—shared between the school and Streetscapes—proving that its true success lies in sustainability and community upliftment.
Going forward, the People’s Market will be held monthly, ensuring ongoing visibility, affordable local goods, and a platform for District 6 entrepreneurs. A complete toolkit—templates, vendor registration forms, indemnities, and marketing material—has been prepared to empower the community and school to manage the event seamlessly.
The Dance-a-Thon was both a fundraiser and an awareness-raising event, designed to support the garden project and the school. In return, the school agreed to provide electricity for one year at no cost, ensuring shared benefit and long-term impact.
Thanks to the extraordinary energy of Lindi, Luke, and Layne, who gave their time, choreography, and passion, the event became an unforgettable highlight. Spectators and participants were treated to dynamic performances, a buzzing atmosphere, and exciting lucky-draw prizes.
The Dance-a-Thon raised R3,560 in profits and, according to the school principal, Mr Hendricks, together with the Minstrels, this event truly “made the day.” It showcased the power of dance, creativity, and unity in strengthening community bonds.
One of the weekend’s most meaningful milestones was the planting of 700 m² of the Trafalgar Renewal Garden, designed to provide food security, employment, and community pride.
Over 5,010 plants were successfully planted, with mulch walkways, tyre planters, and growing beds carefully constructed. A sustainable irrigation system was installed, redirecting natural spring water into a holding tank via a pump system, ensuring the garden thrives despite drought or water restrictions.
The project also created employment: 10 permanent jobs and 15 temporary roles tied to seasonal planting. Streetscape workers received stipends during the preparation phase, ensuring income stability even before completion.
The garden launch drew a wide range of influential community members, each symbolically planting a tree or plant. Ward Councillor Brandon Golding lent his support, while Cool Bananas dedicated a memorial bench and vegetable patch in honour of the owner’s late brother, pledging ongoing sponsorship. The project was widely covered in the Cape Argus and online platforms, celebrating the collective achievement.
The Trafalgar Renewal Mosaic was a creative labour of love, designed to become a permanent symbol of resilience and artistry within the community. While the mosaic is not yet complete, the foundation was laid through the efforts of local volunteers. It will be finalised by a team of American engineering students who have committed to the project.
By November, the mosaic will be erected on the garden fence, where it will stand as a lasting reminder of collaboration and hope. The initiative also offered short-term employment opportunities for homeless individuals, who were paid per unit for their contribution in preparing materials.
These mosaics will now form part of every Streetscapes garden, becoming a signature element of the brand while adding colour and character to community spaces.
The Trafalgar Renewal Weekend brought together markets, dance, gardening, and art to create an unforgettable celebration of District 6. More than just events, these initiatives fostered employment, sustainability, media visibility, and, most importantly, a renewed sense of belonging.
With monthly markets, a thriving food garden, and symbolic art, the legacy of this weekend is only just beginning.
