The Breast Cancer Challenge in South Africa

Like many parts of the world, breast cancer is a leading cause of death among South African women. However, South Africa faces a significantly higher mortality rate than other comparable countries. This is largely due to:

  • Limited access to healthcare centres and screening facilities is a common issue in both rural and urban areas.
  • Resource shortages within the public sector, including insufficient numbers of qualified staff. Currently, there are only five national referral centres in the public sector.
  • Cultural beliefs and stigma surrounding breast cancer.
  • Low literacy rates and limited education about breast health.

PinkDrive’s Life-Saving Mission

To address these challenges, PinkDrive created education trucks and mobile mammography units to bring breast cancer screening, education, and awareness directly to women who need it most.

PinkDrive provides free services to disadvantaged communities by partnering with the corporate sector. Sponsorship and corporate social responsibility initiatives help cover the programme’s operating costs, allowing PinkDrive to expand its reach and impact.

Key Milestones Achieved by PinkDrive

Since its launch, PinkDrive has made remarkable progress, including:

  • The first mobile mammography unit was launched on 30 June 2009.
  • Successfully converting and registering mobile medical equipment.
  • Equipping the unit with advanced CR technology.
  • Developing educational materials tailored for rural communities.
  • Creating a bespoke database system for statistical tracking.
  • Partnering with radiation departments, equipment suppliers, NGOs, and government stakeholders.

Today, PinkDrive operates two mobile breast units across four provincial hospitals in Gauteng, serving approximately 1.6 million women.

The mobile mammography units and education trucks ensure that women in underserved areas—and even corporate workplaces—are reached with the crucial message: “Early Detection Saves Lives.”

Skin Renewal’s Commitment to PinkDrive

In 2010 and 2011, Skin Renewal proudly supported PinkDrive during Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October).

  • 2010 Initiatives:
We launched a unique fundraising initiative by producing 3D lotus flower cards, sold in our branches and shopping centres. With 638 flowers sold, we raised R12,770, which went toward PinkDrive marketing and visibility efforts. Unsold flowers were donated to PinkDrive for resale at their events. Additionally, we sponsored R10,000 towards a table at the M-Net Lunch.Laugh.Life Breast Cancer Luncheon, gifting tickets to ten women who would not otherwise have had the chance to attend.
  • 2011 Initiatives:
We once again sponsored R10,000 for a table at the Shades of Pink Breast Cancer Luncheon at Emperors Palace, allowing ten cancer patients to enjoy this uplifting experience.

Continuing the Fight Against Breast Cancer

Through our partnership with PinkDrive, Skin Renewal reaffirms its commitment to breast cancer awareness, education, and prevention. Together, we aim to empower South African women with access to life-saving screenings, resources, and hope.
