SPAR Women's 10km Challenge

Walking for a Cause: The SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge

The SPAR Women’s 10km Challenge, held at the Parktonian Sports Grounds in Randburg, coincided with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A portion of the race proceeds went to Reach for Recovery, a volunteer-driven support group for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Each volunteer has faced their own battle with the disease, making them uniquely equipped to offer comfort, guidance, and encouragement to women hearing those life-changing words: “You have breast cancer.”

While some of South Africa’s top athletes — including Irvette Van Blerk, Rene Kalmer, Zintle Xiniwe, Annerien van Schalkwyk, Ntombesintu Mfunzi, and Catherine Skosana — competed for podium positions, the true spirit of the event shone through the thousands of women and girls who participated simply for the joy of being part of something meaningful.

The day was more than a race; it was a celebration of community and family. Food stalls, a lively children’s area with jumping castles, clowns, and face painting, and live music from Denim, one of South Africa’s most popular party bands, made it a festive occasion for all.

On 26 August 2011, the Johannesburg Skin Renewal team proudly joined the Challenge. We may not have crossed the finish line first, but we walked with pride, laughter, and purpose — united in support of an incredible cause.
