Twilight Children

Each year, the Skin Renewal team dedicates time and resources to supporting a charity or organisation in need. In 2012, the Gauteng branches chose to partner with Twilight Children, a Child and Youth Care Centre based in Hillbrow. The centre provides care, development, and support to vulnerable children between the ages of 8 and 18 who have been found in urban and inner-city environments in need of protection.

The Twilight Programme

Twilight Children’s mission is to provide safety, education, and life skills while preparing children for reintegration into society. The centre actively encourages children to stay at the shelter and participate in the Twilight Programme, which focuses on:

  • Reunification: Working to reunite children with their families or place them in safe homes.
  • Education: Enrolling children in local schools and offering both formal and informal learning opportunities.
  • Skills Training: Teaching pottery, bead making, baking, and sewing to empower children with creative and practical skills.
  • Sports & Technology: Providing sporting activities, computer training, and access to an IT/Training Centre.
  • Life Skills: Guiding children in areas such as sexual health awareness, HIV/AIDS education, and everyday survival skills.
  • Mentorship: Offering boys positive role models and guidance through structured activities.

The overall purpose of Twilight Children is to serve as a bridging facility through which young people can be supported, equipped, and ultimately mainstreamed back into society.

Facilities and Wider Impact

Thanks to assistance from the Department of Social Development, Twilight Children now has two new buildings on adjacent stands. The organisation is open to all children, regardless of race, gender, or background.

Other initiatives include:

  • Girls’ and Women’s Drop-in Project: Focused on the needs of vulnerable girls and women.
  • School Programmes: Offering both formal and informal training to expand educational opportunities.
  • Risk Mitigation: Providing HIV/AIDS awareness programmes and preventative education for boys and the community.

While the IT/Training Centre forms a key part of their holistic approach to “healthy minds,” the centre is currently facing challenges in gaining accreditation from CITA, which has temporarily paused formal training.
