Wilna was born in Kakamas in the Northern Cape where she went to school and completed her secondary education. After school, she started her nursing career at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town where she completed her Nursing diploma in General Nursing in 1983. After that, she studied Midwifery which was completed in the beginning of 1984.
In 1984-1991 she worked in Tygerberg Hospital’s Trauma unit. During this time (1986-1987) she completed an additional Certificate in Trauma nursing. After the birth of their first child, in 1991, she worked in family planning; as a registered nurse for four years.
In 1996 she and her family moved to Zambia, where they stayed until 1999. Upon returning to South Africa, they settled in Somerset West and she started working at Stellenbosch Medi-Clinic’s Trauma unit for the next 13 years, until January 2014.
