Hormonal Pigmentation / Melasma

Melasma is one of the most challenging pigmentation disorders, often driven by a combination of hormonal fluctuations, sun exposure, inflammation, and genetic factors. At Skin Renewal, we understand that lasting results require more than surface-level treatments. That’s why our doctor-led team takes a holistic, medical approach, addressing both the visible pigmentation and the underlying triggers contributing to melasma. Through customised combination treatments, including advanced technologies, targeted skincare, supplements, and lifestyle support, we help restore clearer, healthier, and more even-toned skin, while minimising recurrence.

Melasma Explained by Dr Maureen Allem
Melasma, often linked to hormones and inflammation, is one of the most complex pigmentation conditions treated at Skin Renewal. In this in-depth video, Dr Maureen explores the latest regenerative approaches to melasma management, uncovering its hormonal triggers, lifestyle links, and inflammatory drivers like mast cell activation.

What Is Melasma?

Melasma is a chronic skin condition characterised by brown or grey-brown patches, usually on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, nose, or chin. It is a type of hyperpigmentation caused by overactive melanocytes—cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. Melasma is more common in women and in individuals with darker skin tones. While it is not dangerous, it can significantly affect self-confidence and emotional well-being.

What Causes Melasma?

Understanding the triggers of melasma is essential for effective management. Common causes and contributing factors include:

  • Sun Exposure: UV radiation stimulates melanin production, making sun exposure the primary melasma trigger.
  • Hormonal Fluctuations: Pregnancy, birth control pills, and hormone replacement therapy often lead to melasma, sometimes referred to as "the mask of pregnancy."
  • Genetic Predisposition: If you have a family history of melasma, you're more likely to develop it.
  • Skin Inflammation: Pollution, harsh skincare products, and certain medications can irritate the skin and worsen pigmentation.
  • Heat Exposure: Not just sunlight, but exposure to heat (like cooking or saunas) can also trigger melasma.
  • Dermal-Epidermal Junction: The health of your DEJ is a large contributor to the formation of melasma.

Lifestyle Factors That Worsen Melasma

Your daily habits majorly affect how your skin responds to treatment. Factors that can trigger or worsen melasma include:

  • Unprotected Sun Exposure: Not wearing SPF or hats can undo all your progress.
  • Hormonal Contraceptives: Can trigger or aggravate melasma due to synthetic oestrogens.
  • Stress: Chronic stress affects hormone levels and triggers inflammation, which can manifest on the skin.
  • Poor Sleep and Diet: These affect both gut health and hormone regulation.

Adopting a melasma-friendly lifestyle, including sun avoidance, stress management, anti-inflammatory nutrition, and hormone balance, can significantly support treatment success.

The Power of Combination Treatments for Melasma

Melasma is a complex condition that requires time, consistency, and a personalised treatment plan. At Skin Renewal, we don’t simply treat the surface — we focus on the underlying causes, from hormonal imbalances to gut health, inflammation, and environmental triggers. Our doctor-led team designs comprehensive protocols that combine advanced in-clinic technologies, customised skincare, oral supplements, and lifestyle modifications.

This multi-layered approach allows us to target pigmentation on both the surface and deeper skin layers, helping restore healthier, even-toned skin. Every treatment plan is carefully tailored after an in-depth consultation, ensuring that each patient receives safe, effective, and sustainable results that address immediate concerns and long-term skin health. Skin Renewal offers advanced melasma treatments tailored to each skin type and severity level. These include:

  • Chemical Peels: Peel treatments target superficial pigmentation and accelerate cell turnover.
  • Laser and Light Treatments: Lasers such as Pico Toning, Fractional lasers (Pico Fractional) and IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) can safely address deeper dermal pigmentation.
  • Skin Needling: Devices like Dermapen, R.Pen, Secret RF Needling and Enymed Intensif enhance product penetration and stimulate skin regeneration.
  • Transdermal Mesotherapy: Delivers pigmentation-reducing actives deep into the skin using FDA-approved Dermo-electroporation technology.
  • LED Light Treatments: Photo Dynamic Therapy supports skin healing, reduces inflammation, and improves skin tone.
  • Mesobrite™: This is an advanced depigmentation treatment exclusive to Skin Renewal. It is designed to effectively target stubborn pigmentation, such as melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

These treatments are prescribed based on your melasma type—epidermal, dermal, or mixed—and your skin's sensitivity.

Topical Products and Oral Supplements for Melasma

A consistent at-home skincare regimen is essential in managing melasma. While in-clinic treatments provide visible change, at-home care and internal support are essential for maintaining results. Skin Renewal has developed its exclusive range of skincare products to deliver medical-grade ingredients to your skin.

Key Skin Renewal products to look for:

Other Key Ingredients Beneficial to Melasma:

  • Niacinamide: Reduces inflammation and pigmentation.

frequently asked
questions

Are treatments for Melasma available at all Skin Renewal clinics?
What does melasma look like?

Melasma typically appears as brown or greyish patches on areas of the face, such as the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and chin. The pigmentation is usually symmetrical and can vary in size, often triggered by sun exposure or hormonal changes.

What vitamin deficiency causes melasma?

A vitamin deficiency does not directly cause melasma, but low levels of certain nutrients, like Vitamin D and B12, may exacerbate skin conditions. A well-balanced diet rich in antioxidants and essential vitamins can support overall skin health and may reduce the risk of pigmentation issues.

How do you stop melasma from spreading?

To prevent melasma from spreading, it's essential to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 50+ every day, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and use products containing ingredients like Vitamin C and tyrosinase inhibitors. Managing stress and maintaining hormonal balance can also help reduce the spread of melasma.

What foods cause melasma?

While there is no direct link between specific foods and melasma, diets high in processed sugars, dairy, and inflammatory foods can contribute to skin inflammation, potentially worsening pigmentation issues. A diet rich in antioxidants, such as fruits, vegetables, and foods high in omega-3, can promote healthy skin.

Does melasma go away?

Melasma can fade over time, especially if triggered by pregnancy or the use of birth control, but it often requires ongoing treatment and maintenance. It can persist or worsen without proper care, especially with continued sun exposure or hormonal imbalances.

What hormones cause melasma?

Hormones like oestrogen and progesterone are strongly linked to melasma. These hormones increase during pregnancy, when using oral contraceptives, or during hormone replacement therapy (HRT), which can trigger or worsen melasma.

Is melasma hard to treat?

Due to its chronic nature and deep pigmentation, melasma can be challenging to treat. To see noticeable improvements and prevent recurrence, a combination of professional treatments, consistent sunscreen use, and long-term skincare management is required.

After trying many different top quality in-store and online, approved by dermatologist brands for my hyperpigmentation and feeling frustrated with little improvement, I was happy to find Skin Renewal Century City. My consultation was such a wonderful experience as I arrived at a beautiful office with friendly staff welcoming me at reception. I had my initial consultation with Dr. Liz Dodds who was also very friendly, knowledgable and professional. She made me feel understood and comfortable throughout my consultation. After assessing my skin, Dr. Liz Dodds explained my condition so well, calmed my fears about some of my skin concerns and gave me hope for the future. She worked out a skin plan for me and explained the way forward with my skin treatments so that nothing would be a surprise for me later. When I had my first treatment, Kayla was my therapist. She was professional and very caring. It was my first ever professional treatment and my expectations were exceeded. Before my treatment, she took me into a beautiful room which had such a serene ambiance. I remember it being a cold day, but Kayla ensured that I be comfortable and warm throughout my treatment as my bed’s electric blanket was turned on before my arrival. As part of my treatment, I received a glutathione peel along with a laser genesis treatment, but every time she would explain what I would be experiencing i.e. some heat or tingling as well as my downtime after each treatment. After my laser treatment, I received a face massage with a MelanoOUT serum, which was just so soothing! A few days after my treatment, Kayla contacted me to find out how my skin was doing and feeling post treatment. Fortunately, my downtime was very little (a few hours) and I could notice a brighter and more glowy appearance on the next day already - which made me so excited for my next treatments. I love that the staff at Skin Renewal Century City makes a concerted effort to make their clients feel welcome, comfortable and valued. They offer professional service from start to finish and they actually care about delivering a service that exudes excellence. I have already been referring close friends and family to Skin Renewal Century City, and I would most certainly refer anybody, who like me, needed help understanding their skin and wants to feel confident in their natural skin.

They had a look at my skin which had severe pigmentation and sun damage and gave me all the possible treatment options available. We decided on the limelight laser treatment and it really didn't disappoint. The before and after images are absolutely amazing. I am loving my clear skin and am feeling more confident every day. With a new skincare program in place, I am so excited to see the results. Skin Renewal Cape Quarter has earned themselves a lifetime client.

I am absolutely blown away by the skin journey I have recently been on. My facial pigmentation has been a real struggle over the years having had much hormonal imbalance and sun damage. I have had an incredible journey at Skin Renewal and visibility has drastically changed! I no longer have the dark spots and blotchy patches. There is a wonderfully even tone that I never thought possible! I cannot recommend Dr Trent Harris highly enough and to top my whole experience off - Sharon (Branch leader) and Beverly (Therapist) have been such great sources of knowledge and comfort throughout. Hoping to see further improvement the way I have thus far. A truly great team and a wonderful experience overall!
